Top speed is the highest confirmed burst, not a sustained cruising pace. Most figures come from GPS tracking, radar guns, or high-speed cameras over short distances. Every species in this dataset holds peak speed for seconds to a few minutes at most. Sustained travel pace is far lower.
Aquatic burst speeds are rarely measured under controlled conditions, which explains the large unranked section below. Terrestrial figures are generally better-documented because field conditions are easier to standardise.
