Most Intelligent Animals

No single test captures animal intelligence. This ranking draws on five lines of evidence: tool manufacture, mirror self-recognition, social learning, documented innovation, and performance in controlled tasks. Each species is scored 1 to 10 based on published ethological literature, normalised across the dataset.

Species with fewer published studies carry conservative estimates. The gap between the top-ranked orca and chimpanzee is narrow; the gap between them and the bottom of the table is wide. All 48 species are scored.
